Our Mission and Philosophy

The mission of Special Olympics British Virgin Islands is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Special Olympics believes that consistent training is essential to the development of sports skills, and that competition among those of equal abilities is the most appropriate means of testing these skills, measuring progress and providing incentives for personal growth.

Special Olympics believes that through sports training and competition, people with intellectual disabilities benefit physically, mentally, socially and spiritually; families are strengthened; and the community at large, both through participation and observation, is united in understanding people with intellectual disabilities in an environment of equality, respect and acceptance.

The Official Launch of Special Olympics British Virgin Islands - June 28th 2009

“The most fun we’ve ever had!”  Was one family’s proclamation “Can we do it again next week?” was asked more than once as the Family Fun Fete drew to a close at Manuel Reef Marina, the home of Special Olympics BVI on Sunday.

Many side shows, games and activities were offered as the day unfolded, all organised by the newly formed Board of Directors, Trustees and Coaches of the year round programme which will provide sporting activities and competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

SUNRISE ROTARY VISIT

We visited The Rotary Sunrise Club on Tuesday September 29th and went down a storm!  Jamie, Akeem, Brandon, Kaheem and Ali came to the breakfast meeting accompanied by Lorna, Colin and Alison from the Board of Directors along with a family member for each Athlete.

'Hope' the first Squib to be officially adopted was presented with a cheque from Sunrise Rotary members of $3,333.33.  This means that she will be in the water, ready to be christened on December 31st.  The National Squib is a 19' keelboat, perfect for 'Sailability BVI' to teach our SOBVI Athletes aboard.  The boats are forgiving for those who are less mobile, but still offer our sailing team valuable skills in a class frequently used in the UK for Special Olympic Regattas.
